The National Network of Abortion Funds builds power with members to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access by centering people who have abortions and organizing at the intersections of racial, economic, and reproductive justice.
Vision
We envision a world where every reproductive decision, including abortion, takes place in thriving communities that are safe, peaceful, and affordable. We envision a world where all people have the power and resources to care for and affirm their bodies, identities, and health for themselves and their families—in all areas of their lives. As we shift the conversation about abortion, it will become a real option, accessible without shame or judgment.
Values
Intersectionality
NNAF recognizes the connections between systems of oppression. A comprehensive vision of justice for our communities must involve working towards economic, racial, gender, and reproductive justice.
Autonomy
Every person has the non-negotiable human right to determine whether, when, and how to create family. People deserve unrestricted access to the rights, information, and resources to care for themselves and their families.
Collective Power
NNAF is determined to build a base of shared power from the ground while standing alongside other movements in solidarity. People who are most directly and disproportionately impacted by structural barriers are the best architects of solutions that center their voices, experiences, and leadership.
Compassion
NNAF advocates for a reduction of shame and an increase in compassion for people as they navigate life. Reproductive coercion, burdens, and barriers to reproductive healthcare are all forms of violence.
Member organizations work across our network to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access. Some of them work with clinics to help pay for your abortion. Some of them offer support such as transportation, childcare, translation, doula services, and somewhere to stay if you have to travel to get your abortion.
Our network’s organizations are autonomous, diverse, and united to move towards a world we want to live in, where all reproductive options, including abortion, are valued and free of coercion.
There are over 80 organizations in our network. NNAF provides leadership development, infrastructure support, and organizing technical assistance to our members because we know funds are uniquely positioned to meet the needs of their communities today, while being a powerful force for political and social change in the future.
Abortion funds and NNAF are working together to remove barriers to abortion access while making deep change in our communities. Find out more about your local fund and join the movement for a more just and equitable future.
With the call to “Fund Abortion, Build Power!” in mind, we’re building an active grassroots base of people directly affected by barriers to abortion access to inform and implement necessary cultural and political change. Abortion funds are experts in their own communities across widely varying cultural and political geographies, and they hold unique perspectives as frontline responders to people seeking abortion care support. Through a vision of collective power and participatory processes in partnership with our members, we are building organizing power that centers people who have abortions.
“Strong Families is a home for the 4 out of 5 people living in the US who do not live behind the picket fence—whose lives fall outside outdated notions of family, with a mom at home and a dad at work. While that life has never been the reality for most of our families, too many of the policies that affect us are based on this fantasy. From a lack of affordable childcare and afterschool programs, to immigration policy and marriage equality, the way we make policy and allocate resources needs to catch up to the way we live. We see the trend of families defining themselves beyond the picket fence—across generation, race, gender, immigration status, and sexuality—as a powerful and promising development for the US, and we want to help policy makers catch up.
Our vision is that every family have the rights, recognition and resources it needs to thrive. We are engaging hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals in our work to get there.”
There are multiple ways to support abortion access by supporting your local abortion funds and work across funds at the national level. Learn about ways you can give!
Letter from Debasri Ghosh, Managing Director Dear Abortion Access Champion, It’s difficult to describe the weight of this moment. As this newsletter goes to print, we’re reeling from a confirmed leaked draft majority decision of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a significant case centered on a Mississippi abortion […]
Letter from Yamani Hernandez, Executive Director Dear friends, I’ve been thinking about the language of crisis and who is allowed to use it – whose definition generates action, and who feels called to act. For some of our communities, relentless crises have been ignored, seen as exaggerated, irrelevant, or simply an unfortunate fact of life. […]
